Introduction

The emotional domain has led Dang Van Quynh to tell a story in paintings in his own painting language. The gray and yellow brown arrays evoke the peace of space, the time seems to be silence and stopping, it makes the viewer concentrating their minds on the scene: the cityscape of the old town passes quietly and slowly at noon summer. The jagged colors between the bright patches (in description of the sky) and the dark patches (in the houses, the streets), and the black dots of the windows … all made the glamor of ancient Hanoi. In particular, Hanoi’s Old Quarter in this painting is very different from the busy streets. It can be said that Dang Van Quynh has used his art to capture the emotional relationship with the city he claims to be his.
