Article about the artist
Bui Huu Hung
Being descended from a family with the traditional painting job, Bui Huu Hung quickly
grasped the know-how in this field to become an painter-expert specialized in lacquer of the
Vietnamese painting in the innovation stage. Quintessence and up-and- down of the paint used
for screens, parallel sentences/ couplets, painted statues, antique furniture in temples and
pagodas deeply influenced on painters and they were shown in modern lacquer works.
He is the first artist who put the images of princes and princesses into paintings. Bui Huu
Hung did not only exploited ancient cultural elements such as clothes, jewelry, patterns but
also formed a different world outlook. In a quiet space, those in royal clothes stand or sit
surrounding ancient objects, creating unreal images from the past and presenting existing and
value characteristics. Paintings are questions with outlook on life and nostalgia created by the
mysterious spiritual world of the artist.
Bui Huu Hung was born in 1957 in Hanoi and graduated from Hanoi Fine Arts University.
He is a member of the association of international lacquers artists. His works were exhibited
in many places of the world such as London, Norway, New York, Bulgaria, Poland, Belgium
and Vietnam.
