Vu Anh

At the age of 32, Vu Anh took his first steps into the world of cinema. In this field, he wanted to fulfill the expectations about a different “path” to filmmaking…

“The Road” is also the name of the movie script by this young man from Quang Nam, and he received the Gold Award in the contest “Talented Screenwriter 2017” organized by CGV in June 2017 with the participation of many famous directors and screenwriters. Defeating more than 4,000 participants, Vo Anh Vu was honored the talented young screenwriter with the opportunity to work with leading film producers in Vietnam. “The Road” is a satirical comedy, telling the story of a funeral versus a wedding on a narrow street in his hometown. “The script idea comes from the fable of the white goat – the black goat and the image of a peaceful village, family relationships and villagers…” – Vu shared.

After more than 5 years graduating from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Art, Vu decided to go back to school. The senior student at the Department of Cinematography, Ho Chi Minh City College of Stage Performance and Cinematics, is quite busy with a filming schedule, a writing schedule … and a painting schedule. If Fine Arts opened the first door for Vu to Art, Cinema shines a sincerely and deeply light in life to love what he does and does what he loves. Vu writes quite well, so the stories keep bringing him to the passion deep in his heart. “As a young director, I believe that cinema should always start with a good script, because the idea is very vague… A good director is necessarily be a good writer. Even though I started this dream late, I think I am a lucky person, because my experience, my thinking and my artistic have created me today…” – Vu shared. It seems to Vu that he is wanting or rather ambitious for a cinematic work with different expressive languages, “so that the image itself resonates and resonates in the viewer’s perception”, the artistic freedom of the director and the perception freedom of the audience. These two balances should always be viewed equally. And Vu, was not afraid to let go of his dream.

More than 13 years into painting, Vu has also experienced many ups and downs in life. The rich in genres as well as breakthroughs in materials have brought him impressive solo exhibitions with smoke paintings, coffee paintings… His paintings seem to flicker with images of freedom, of migration, of the inspirations of a weirdo who never stops creating and is always “rebellious”. With the hazy smoke like a desert illusion, nature and people gradually appear unusually idyllic. Or somewhere in the brown color of pure coffee, a little bit of afternoon light in the highlands is gentle enough to take the heart of viewer… All of it reflects the strong imprint of the young man borned in Quang Nam who dropped his heart into “The lake of Art” in the middle of a busy city. It is difficult to predict what will come tomorrow because cinema is still a world full of glamor but with many thorns and challenges. However, with steady steps along with his constant efforts, hopefully one day, the 7th Art in Vietnam will have Vu Anh – a son who borned and raised in the sunny and windy land of Quang Nam…
