BUI QUANG THANG: WHY DO WE DYE OURSELVES BLUE WHEN WE LOVE?

Blue colors always come with messages of peace or calmness. However, blue is also the color that represents sadness and feelings that are difficult to express. Bui Quang Thang chose this color as the main color for his works, with the subjects often being couples. So why do they dye blue when they love?

As an experienced artist, Bui Quang Thang has achieved a lot of success at home and abroad, with exhibitions nationwide and participation in prestigious collections in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, France, and Hong Kong. Along with his works, Bui Quang Thang has introduced art lovers to a new perspective on contemporary lacquer paintings in Vietnam.

Bui Quang Thang plays with shades of blue, sometimes warm, sometimes heavy, sometimes harsh, sometimes gentle. The artist dug deep into all the colors of green and then placed them on a sumptuous feast for the viewer. To harmonize with the scene, Bui Quang Thang added neutral colors such as black and white, thereby highlighting the characters in the painting.

Following a minimalist style, the subjects in Bui Quang Thang’s paintings are not flashy or noisy but extremely quiet. Bui Quang Thang placed the lovers next to each other in the middle of the space as if they were deeply enjoying the surreal scenery around them. The subject is depicted only through basic lines and shapes. There is almost no separation between the two individuals; the silhouettes of the two people intertwine under the artist’s eyes, looking at the existence of love.

With the overwhelming green color, many people will feel a deep sadness when admiring Bui Quang Thang’s works for the first time. Even though a couple is hugging each other, watching the moon in the dark, or standing among tiny flower bushes, viewers unconsciously think this is a sad love story. Without any light from contrasting colors or complicated shapes, Bui Quang Thang’s couple appears extremely simple and quiet. They gently blend into the surrounding space, enjoying the calmness that peace brings.

Those who have ever had the opportunity to live in love will probably be the ones who best understand the saying, “Life is not only rosy.” We begin a love affair with the hot colors of passion and curiosity, dreams and pure love. With time, the fire no longer burned like the first days but was replaced by a peaceful lake surface, where the two of them had a lot of time to rest assured, contemplate and understand. Indeed, there will be arguments and sadness lurking here and there, but if we stand together in the dark blue waves of life, the two of us will definitely overcome it. That seems to be the reason why Bui Quang Thang chose blue to describe love. His works reflect the blue of tears but also the green of hope for a peaceful future ahead. It is the intense vibrations that viewers receive when viewing Bui Quang Thang’s paintings that are the biggest catalyst in the love and support of audiences and critics for his works.

Not only presenting musical romantic stories, Bui Quang Thang also conveys his love for lacquer in his works. Choosing a difficult traditional material to depict a youthful and virtual theme, Bui Quang Thang successfully created a unique and alluring visual experience. He himself once said: “For me, the figure must be made like a perfect lacquer painting, and if I don’t have a perfect figure, I don’t want to paint.” It is the meticulousness and seriousness of this profession that has helped Bui Quang Thang maintain the green flame of peace and hope, continuing to convey his love of art to the audience tirelessly.
