TRADITIONAL LACQUER IN DO DUC KHAI’S PAINTINGS
Countless materials have been tested in an attempt to capture the brief moment of the lotus bloom. In Do Duc Khai’s point of view, our national flower is presented through a very Vietnamese material: Lacquer.
Using traditional colors in the lacquer technique such as red, white, and yellow, Do Duc Khai picks the freshest lotus and places them in the painting frame. Different from the usual works that convey the lightness of the lotus, Do Duc Khai creates a fierce contrasting effect: The white lotus stands out against the scorching red scene of the summer heat.
Born in 1969, Do Duc Khai is a prominent name in the Vietnamese lacquer painting scene with multiple national awards. Not only focusing on lotuses, he also works on the daily rhythm of life that is constantly changing and developing.
