THE STORY OF VU ANH’S “QUAN TUOC CAO THANH DO”

Vu Anh may not be a familiar name for art lovers. However, the themes in the paintings and the stories he wants to tell the audience are very familiar.

“I was born into a farming family in Quang Nam’s sunny and windy countryside. I was extremely fortunate to have grown up with my father. In my memory, I still can’t forget the time I once asked my father, “Is there anything that lasts forever?” My father smiled and said it could only be moments.

It wasn’t until later, when I grew up, through joys and sorrows, I fully understood the meaning of my father’s words. It is true that it can only be a “moment,” an accidental moment that passes through your eyes. But there will only be a “golden moment” that stays in your mind forever and cannot be dissolved.

The sparrows frolicking on the branches is such a moment. It has remained in my mind since childhood until I decided to show it in my work. To realize a golden moment on a blank page is not easy at all, from arranging the layout to choosing the number of characters. I came to the decision to learn about the numbers in feng shui for this particular piece.

The work “Quan tuoc cao thanh do” is a great and unique work of mine that depicts in detail the joyful and chirping spirit of 29 sparrows perched on a fruit-laden persimmon branch consisting of 99 sweet ripe persimmons! I chose these two most beautiful numbers to represent “eternal longevity” and “forever generating fortune” for the owner predestined to own the work. Each portrait of a sparrow is a separate story that creates an overall peace and happiness that spreads throughout the piece. Those emotions will forever come to the viewer when they see the work in a monumental space dedicated to it.

Looking at my work for a long time, I decided to call the work “Quan tuoc cao thanh do.” “Quan tuoc” is a large flock of sparrows gathered together. “Cao thanh” is a persimmon tree that grows wild on the mountainside. “Do” is a big picture. The overall name is a big picture depicting the joy of a large flock of sparrows on the branch of a fruit-laden persimmon tree in the ripe season that grows on the mountainside.”
